San Mateo Park Association

Island and Street Tree Project (Ongoing)

Objectives and Goals for 2004

Objectives

I.  Maintain master planting plan

II.  Improve general appearance of islands

III.  Build community through awareness and involvement with the Park’s public landscapes

Goals

I.  Maintain master planting plan

         A.  Plant and replace island and street trees as opportunity or need arises

         B.  Continue early pruning-for-shape program for new street trees that are planted under utility wires (2nd round)

            1. re-inventory for candidates

            2. work with City to execute indicated pruning

C.  Monitor islands for needed maintenance pruning

            1. inventory all islands for maintenance needs of trees

            2. compare assessments with City, and establish maintenance priorities/schedule

D.  Remove and replace unauthorized street trees, per guidelines agreed to with City

            1. update inventory of (immature) unauthorized trees in easement strips

            2. complete process to remove and replace these on at least 6 sites

II.  Improve general appearance of islands

            A.  Revitalize Island Rep. program

                 1. initiate regular communications with Reps. (bulletin/newsletter 2-3x per year)

                 2. collect “island snap shot” report from each Rep., to serve as baseline assessment of each island’s condition/needs

                 3. consider “doubling up” island reps., so that more islands have partners involved in their upkeep

             B.  Improve weed control and chip maintenance on islands

                        1. assess resources available:  City, island rep./volunteer, Association funded, etc.

                        2. implement stepped up maintenance program for at least one sector of islands

III.  Build community through awareness and involvement with the Park’s public landscapes

A.  Increase awareness of the landscape heritage of the Park and the ongoing program to restore and maintain that heritage

1. develop brochure about Park’s public landscapes, and deliver to all new residents  (consider initial distribution to all residents) (note: other info., as developed, could be added to create a welcome package for new residents)

-- this would be a joint project with lead Director for Communication –

                        2.  explore feasibility of creating discreet signage for selected islands, combining historical and botanical info.

         B.  Feature at least one island / Island Rep. / neighborhood group effort to improve or maintain an island in each issue of the Association’s general newsletter

         C.  Increase neighborhood involvement with island improvement and maintenance

                1. encourage/facilitate periodic neighborhood work parties to clean up islands

( with goal of having at least 10 of these in 2004)

-- this would be a joint project with Island Reps. and lead Director for Community Events –

2. develop at least 3 additional coalitions of neighbors who will take on maintenance of “their” islands (model: island at Greenwood and Warren)
