Public Trees in San Mateo Park
Planting
-
The City of San Mateo provides and plants street trees in the public right-of-way at no cost to residents.
-
Tree species are selected based on a Master Plan developed collaboratively by the City and SMPNA.
-
Homeowners interested in having a street tree planted can contact SMPNA at board@sanmateopark.org
Watering
-
The City waters newly planted street and island trees during the dry season for the first two years.
-
Homeowners are expected to supplement watering to ensure tree health and growth.
-
SMPNA funds additional watering for island trees during their first 3–5 years, supported by member contributions
Maintenance
-
Due to budget constraints, the City only prunes public trees when they pose a hazard. Routine maintenance, such as deadwood removal and structural pruning, is not regularly performed.
-
SMPNA identifies and funds structural pruning for young island trees, typically 3–5 years after planting.
-
Homeowners may privately prune street trees but must obtain a permit from the City's Managing Arborist - 650-522-7420.
Removal
-
SMPNA maintains a list with the City of dead street and island trees. Non-hazardous trees are removed in batches under citywide contracts, which may result in delays.
-
Stumps are usually removed just before replacement trees are planted.
-
To report a dead street tree, contact SMPNA or request an inspection by the City Arborist.
Island Maintenance
Planting and Renewal
-
SMPNA oversees the renewal of island plantings, selecting appropriate tree species to maintain the Park's distinctive landscape.
-
Recent projects include replanting with resistant species and installing efficient irrigation systems.
Grounds Maintenance
-
Islands have experienced increased weed growth due to recent rains.
-
City maintenance has been limited due to crew shortages and equipment issues.
-
Residents are encouraged to assist with weeding and litter removal.
-
The City is considering outsourcing grounds maintenance to improve service.
Street Sweeping
-
Street curbs in San Mateo are swept once a month.
-
Islands are scheduled for sweeping only in months with a fifth week, resulting in four sweeps per year.
-
Sweeping may be delayed due to equipment maintenance or weather conditions.
-
Residents are asked not to deposit swept leaves onto islands, as they may contain pollutants. Instead, place them in compost bins.
